One-Year-Ago Thesis

Maybe because now I am still looking for thesis topic, so I want to share my one-year-ago thesis abstract. Here it goes:

Various information systems have been used to manage organization data. Communication problems usually occur between these various information systems because they were built with different models, technologies, and programming languages. Applying integrated information system based on SOA and multi-tier architecture became a solution to solve the problem. However, when it comes to applying new system in organizations, usually, organizations will be curious about how they can ensure the system is aligned with their goal. Process capability assessment can be used to ensure the system aligns with organizations‘ goal.

Designing phase for integrated information system based on SOA and multi-tier architecture had been delivered in Final Project. However, the relation between organization process capability and applying integrated information system based on SOA and multi-tier architecture was not discussed. Therefore, the aim of this research is designing process capability model that can be used to assess organization process capability in applying integrated information system based on SOA and multi-tier architecture.

ISO 15504-3 is used as a reference to determine the activities for process capability assessment in applying integrated information system based on SOA and multi-tier architecture. The assessment activities consists of planning, data collection, data validation, process attribute rating, and reporting. There are four steps in planning activities. First, identification for processes which are needed in applying integrated information system. Second, determine the base practices (BP) and work products (WP). Third, designing assessment model for level 1 until level 5. Last, designing the questionnaire. The processes for applying integrated information system based on SOA and multi-tier architecture consists of fifteen processes in five phases: requirement analysis (RA), design (D), realization (R), integration and testing (InT), and management (M).

Designing process capability assessment model for applying integrated information system based on SOA and multi-tier architecture uses ISO 15504 as a reference. This assessment model has two dimensions, namely process dimension and capability level dimension. ISO 15504’s process capability level and SOA maturity model have been used as references to design process capability level in the assessment model. The process capability assessment model is tested with a case study in Unit Sumber Daya Informasi (USDI) ITB. Data collection is conducted with two methods, interview and questionnaire. Interview is used to understand organization’s current condition while questionnaire is used to assess USDI ITB process capability in applying integrated information system based on SOA and multi-tier architecture.

There are several conclusions from this Thesis. First, process capability assessment model for applying integrated information system based on SOA and multi-tier architecture has been designed and represented as a process capability assessment toolkit. Second, process dimension in this model consists of fifteen processes in five phases. Third, respondents should be given an explanation about the questionnaire material in advance so that each respondent have the same knowledge level related to the questionnaire material. Fourth, USDI ITB is at process capability level 0 in applying integrated information system based on SOA and multi-tier architecture. Level 0 indicates lots of base practices are not performed and lots of work products are not produced by USDI ITB. Fifth, based on interview and questionnaire for process capability level 1, it can be concluded that SOA have not been applied in ITB.

Keywords: process capability, assessment model, ISO 15504, integrated information system based on SOA and multi-tier architecture, process capability assessment toolkit, base practice, work product.

Such a long title for my thesis and I always can’t remember it exactly word-by-word😛 Well, now it’s the time to make a new one and the first step is find a topic *fiuh*

再見!
